Teaching Science and Health in Elementary Schools
During the semester in which I studied the methods behind teaching elementary science and health, I had the opportunity to develop a unit. In a previous class, I wrote a science lesson about the Earth's water. I thought it was pretty good; however, when I took the science methods course, I quickly realized that it needed to be reworked. I realized that I was doing all the talking, and my students were not doing any investigating. I incorporated Gardner's multiple intelligences and Bloom's taxonomy with varying levels of thinking, but I had yet learned about inquiry investigations. So, I reflected on this lesson and chose to rework it into a unit suitable for 4th grade. The investigations engage students, the learning is authentic and therefore I believe students will learn and retain their knowledge of principles and concepts. It is my hope that this method of teaching science will excite more students and create fantastic scientists in the future. In addition to the "new" science lesson, I also attached a series of assessments for a health unit.
