Fourth Grade Number Sense Lesson Plan (click here)
During my student teaching placement, I wrote and implemented a unit in conjunction with the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) curriculum. This unit addressed PA eligible content as well as common core content. Students explored the concept of a million through hands on classroom activities. It is easier to understand just how big a million is when we connect it to a context we are familiar with. Students also made large numbers by rolling dice. They pronounced the large numbers and recorded them in standard form, expanded form and word form. Students rounded numbers, compared and contrasted numbers and then organized them by using place value as well as a large number line on our floor. I utilized a Promethean board flip chart to assist my instruction. Upon completion of the unit, I administered the district's unit assessment.
INTASC Standard 8: Assessment The teacher assesses the students formally or informally to evaluate the social, intellectual and physical development of the students.
On page 3 of the above lesson plan is a pre-assessment quiz that I made. I used the results to get a better understanding of my students' background knowledge. I believe assessments drive instruction and planning. As a teacher I will continually reflect on student performance and then differentiate my instruction in order to help all students succeed. Assessment may come in the form of an informal conversation or quick check for understanding using a dry erase board. It can also come in the form of a project whether it is written, pictoral, a video or a song. I strongly believe that a paper and pencil exam is not the best way to assess all students, nor should assessment only come at the end of a unit. However, the ability to demonstrate understanding on an exam should not be over looked since this is a skill students need to practice.
