Click here to view a language arts lesson plan. One of the first lessons I taught in kindergarten was the letter Mm and the /m/ sound. I used whole group instruction to introduce the letter and the sound. I modeled the content and then provided guided practice opportunities. Students worked in small groups to practice handwriting and to apply what they learned. I concluded the lesson with my sound muncher friend; the sound muncher is a decorated swing lid garbage can that could only eat picture cards that began with the /m/ sound. This activity provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding individually as well as provided an opportunity for me to assess their learning.
INTASC Standard 4: Multiple Instructional Strategies: The teacher must be able to understand and use a variety of instructional strategies so that they are able to solve problems, think critically and show better performance.
I believe students need to see a concept being modeled, have an opportunity to practice the concept with guidance and then independently move forward with the task. During the above lesson, I did just that. Furthermore, I incorporated various modes of learning in order to achieve the objective and meet learners' needs.
